“This illustration is based on an entity I encountered in a nightmare.
I had never seen such a beast. It had the trunk and tusks of an elephant, huge bulging eyes, a prominent brow with a bump on it's head, a tail like an ox with a tuft of fur at the end, a mohawk of longer fur down its spine, short fangs, floppy ears like a foo dog, and the legs and paws (complete with sharp talons) of a large cat. Truly a chimera, a total hodge-podge of parts. Though it was a terrifying sight to behold, I could not take my eyes off of it. Flowers bloomed it's wake with each step it took, so it had a reasonable chance of not being evil, right? I stood motionlessly, half frozen in fear and half in awe, as the creature approached me, it's trunk reaching slowly towards my face. It telepathically spoke to me and said, "I am the dream eater." It then promptly sucked me up with its trunk, transporting me into a new and far more delightful dream.
Upon waking shortly thereafter and frantically researching the being I had seen so vividly in my sleep, I discovered it was was very much "real" (at least as far as I am concerned). What I found was that a creature with a description matching nearly exactly what I myself witnessed has been a part of Japanese mythology since the 14th century known as "Bakus, the Dream Eaters". Particularly the netsuke (miniature carved sculptures) of Bakus quite accurately depict what I personally witnessed the creature to look like in my own dreams. Bakus are said to devour bad dreams and nightmares, and in my dream, and in two subsequent ones since, Baku has done just that. But you must be careful, because if you call on these beings too much they will eat up your hopes and dreams.
Note: Immediately in the same morning in which I awoke from this dream, I wrote down an elaborate description of features and did some rough sketches of the Baku which I met. So in my piece I have tried to render my own version of Baku as accurately as possible to my own personal encounter, and not draw too heavily on other historic depictions. One aspect I wish to note in which I failed to render accurately was the color of the fur - as the Baku I saw was wore a coat of solid white shaggy fur. Oh well, shit happens and it turned out blue instead. Better luck next time.
