dream within a dream
featuring: siliconbleach, igetnokick, grigoriypeppo, kurayami22 & russell_stewart
Even though the theme is based on a quote from a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, which you are very welcome to refer to of course, don't let this influence how you approach the topic. The topic is essentially "dream within a dream". Associate freely and enjoy our fourth Art Jam.

“Digital Painting. My interpretation of a dream within a dream.
Often, I become aware when I am dreaming and when this happens usually things are familiar, but details are distorted accompanied with this feeling I can only described as other worldly. The intent for this piece is for the viewer to experience a similar feeling and to let their mind wander. To find a meaning unique to themselves, possibly seeing what I do or not at all. To begin a daydream because of my work which began as my minds dream. To find a dream within my dream. ”

“At surface I try to experiment the border of whats called beautiful. Young people are very vulnerable to depression. Life can seem so cruel and hard to fit in specially without the life experience and knowledge. Body health is straightly connected to your mental health still people mistreat their body’s and separate the mind acting like they are a separate being. The complexity of life often frightens young minds. Sadly, this often tends to lead young people to bad life paths and drugs. Here is my piece “the last pill” its picturing a young woman`s last second frozen in time when her body couldn’t handle the abuse. My interpretation of it is that her poor health chanced her world view. Making her unable to see the bigger picture. Making her life a “nightmare” and all see could see or seem was in this little bubble of hers lost not seeing reality.”

“Am I dreaming or am I not?
O that riddle bothers me a lot.
And what is real and what is not?
In humble slumber I forgot.
enigma - Not only a picture to look at but a mystery to explore.

“John 8:32 "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." … truth has power and freedom in truth. God knows what you’ve been through and who you really are. It’s difficult living in this broken world filled with sin … feeling insecure and wonder if we are good enough … if we are doing enough. We all sin but we can only better ourselves through faith. We can’t allow ourselves to be slaves of sin! Love everyone for who they are no matter what. Help one another through love and encouragement. bedridden your sins of lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. Free yourself of the lies that the devil feeds us. Know the truth of love in our lord and savior, Jesus Christ“

“.. in dreams i rise from the material to the immaterial, i witness horrors, i witness beauty. I awake into subconsciousness and ask, what can never be asked by words, and listen with my heart and absorb with my soul. And then descend back to the earthly kingdom.”

“Prismacolor pencil on matte paper 12”x9”
The dream within a dream is captured here by a youth who is an avid drug user. He lives within his own dream on a daily basis, whereas his loved ones dream for him to have another life in the world most of us know
This is a portrait of my brother. It was taken the same day he left the hospital where he had his forehead stitched up because he was hit in the face by another homeless fellow wielding a metal pipe. At first the picture I used as a reference was upsetting to me, but at the same time I found a beauty in it, that only grew. Eventually I decided I wanted to paint him. I find this portrait to be the preamble to the painting.”

“Another Dream
(Ink pen, watercolour pencils on paper (A4); + digitally re-worked)
“I’m awake… I guess….”
Concept:
This drawing is driven by the doubting question of whether all the things you perceive in what you may call "reality" are actually real or not.
It’s about the devastating idea of maybe being lost in only one of numerous layers of a dream, instead - never to be 100% sure of whether you’re awake or just still dreaming on at another level.
I tried to depict that very moment shortly after the idea hit the mind of this man for the first time.

“Poe's poem illustrates life slipping away, akin to grains of sand, and I imagine it as us returning to the stars from which we came.
‘We long to return, and we can because the cosmos is also within us. We’re made of star stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.’ - Carl Sagan“

“‘You can jump between dreams, just find a red piece of card’
-My brother, age ten
Dream hopping was all we talked about
Lucid, aware and in control
Twenty two years later, I still think of those times
And on days where reality is too much, I'll find a red piece of card
Hoping it'll transport me away, for all of this was just a dream within a dream“

it may be the realism of a dream that keeps us asleep, though it is also realism that assures us we are awake. we are only aware of the distortions of reality when that suspension of disbelief is lifted. this painting depicts such a distortion and attempts to stretch the limits of belief with realism.”

“[india ink wash, alcohol, watercolor, copic on arches hot press]
Dreams can be a wonderland and sometimes bring us discomfort, unease, confusion, upset, or helplessness. Sometimes, some of us can wake feeling as though we're being smothered; other times some may wake in a haze. For some what is experienced while unconscious may directly apply to matters when awake. For those of us who experience nightmarish dreams, sleep is not something that comes easily- and sound sleep even more troublesome.”

“This illustration is based on an entity I encountered in a nightmare.
I had never seen such a beast. It had the trunk and tusks of an elephant, huge bulging eyes, a prominent brow with a bump on it's head, a tail like an ox with a tuft of fur at the end, a mohawk of longer fur down its spine, short fangs, floppy ears like a foo dog, and the legs and paws (complete with sharp talons) of a large cat. Truly a chimera, a total hodge-podge of parts. Though it was a terrifying sight to behold, I could not take my eyes off of it. Flowers bloomed it's wake with each step it took, so it had a reasonable chance of not being evil, right? I stood motionlessly, half frozen in fear and half in awe, as the creature approached me, it's trunk reaching slowly towards my face. It telepathically spoke to me and said, "I am the dream eater." It then promptly sucked me up with its trunk, transporting me into a new and far more delightful dream.
Upon waking shortly thereafter and frantically researching the being I had seen so vividly in my sleep, I discovered it was was very much "real" (at least as far as I am concerned). What I found was that a creature with a description matching nearly exactly what I myself witnessed has been a part of Japanese mythology since the 14th century known as "Bakus, the Dream Eaters". Particularly the netsuke (miniature carved sculptures) of Bakus quite accurately depict what I personally witnessed the creature to look like in my own dreams. Bakus are said to devour bad dreams and nightmares, and in my dream, and in two subsequent ones since, Baku has done just that. But you must be careful, because if you call on these beings too much they will eat up your hopes and dreams.
Note: Immediately in the same morning in which I awoke from this dream, I wrote down an elaborate description of features and did some rough sketches of the Baku which I met. So in my piece I have tried to render my own version of Baku as accurately as possible to my own personal encounter, and not draw too heavily on other historic depictions. One aspect I wish to note in which I failed to render accurately was the color of the fur - as the Baku I saw was wore a coat of solid white shaggy fur. Oh well, shit happens and it turned out blue instead. Better luck next time.

““Among the Wildflowers," inspired by the song of the same title by The Hotelier.
The idea for this self-portrait came to me during the span of two nights earlier this year, during which I was struggling with suicidal thoughts. Sleep was the only way I knew how to put my mind to ease.
The first night, I fell asleep without taking my medication, which always results in vivid dreams, and once I wake up, severe sleep paralysis. I woke up at some point in the middle of the night unable to move, and this time, sleep did not rid me of the terrible sadness I was feeling. A demon appeared in front of me and screamed at me to "Do it!” – to end my life.
I decided right then that I wasn't going to let my inner demons win.
The next night, during another vivid dream, somehow I managed to throw myself off the bed and hit my upper cheekbone on the edge of a coffee table. I always thought maybe that was the demon trying to get his revenge.
Ultimately, this piece is about my inner struggles and how I view myself. The self-portrait represents my insecurities. The prescription bottle represents depression. The wildflowers represent opioid addiction. The demon reaching toward me, along with the cut below my eye, represent my perception of reality, and sometimes, when I'm feeling at my worst, my place within it.”
